Michelle is an American development anthropologist and interculturalist with fieldwork experiences in West Africa and Central America, with research interests focusing on identity, diversity, and community in different organizational and cultural environments.
A central issue guiding my long-term interests focuses on how organizations integrate differences while simultaneously generating inequalities. This is a continuity of her doctoral research on “The Aesthetics of Necessity: Re-considering Culture and Development in Africa” which explores the post-colonial condition in a West African new social movement organization based in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. This work has provided her with the insight that the past of one place and culture can provide glimpses into the future of another and how post-modernity bears witness to the ‘imperial boomerang’ effect documented by Césaire, Arendt, or Foucault.
